The Portal of Practice: Ahimsa with Annabelle Terry

Join us in collaboration and exploration into the first facet of Yoga, Ahimsa. Ahimsa translates to non-harm, and it is noted by Patanjali as the first gateway into the eight-limbed practice of Yoga. Non-harm may initially strike us as a simple conversation, however, a deep practice of Ahimsa is extensively complex, laborious and illuminating. When rooted in non-harm, harm reduction and harm repair, we can cultivate more loving atmospheres in our internal and external worlds. Throughout the week, we’ll explore the lifelong practice of Ahimsa as it shows up in ourselves, our interpersonal relationships, our communities, toward all beings, and in junction with the earth.

Our container is set in the heart of the jungle at the Sanctuary at Two Rivers. At this unique and curated location, we’ll be deeply held by Mother Nature and the Sanctuary’s dedication to spiritual study. Additionally, we’ll be enlivened by the delicious food of Gaia Gourmet. We’ll also experience deep nourishment and support through many yogic techniques including pranayama, mantra, meditation and asana. A full bodied practice of Yoga will guide us as we explore Ahimsa and work toward love, compassion, freedom and union within all realms. In tangent with this first Yama, we will explore its relationship with the other Yamas and Niyamas, such as Satya/Truthfulness, Asteya/Non-Stealing, Svadyaya/Spiritual & Self Study and Tapas/Discipline.

Your host and space holders will offer guidance, support and act as amplifiers of ancient wisdom. However, they are NOT going to provide quick and easy answers. This program is NOT intended to collapse or simplify the life-long practice of Ahimsa. Our intention is to co-create questions and tools to engage with these ideas in meaningful ways. We will all learn from each other, and the wisdom of Yoga, acting in courageous honesty and curiosity in our steps toward living Ahimsa. Through community and reflection, we’ll engage in a deep practice of Self and Collective study through powerful questions.

Some questions we may explore together are:

What is harm?

What creates and perpetuates harm?

What is safety?

How do our thoughts impact our feelings of safety?

How can we address conflict lovingly?

How do we as individuals receive love?

What does deep listening feel like?

How can we engage with our communities?

How can we work toward collective liberation?

What is spiritual bypassing?

How can we lovingly hold each other and ourselves accountable?

Where do we hold judgement, and how can we learn to judge less?

What role can we play in reducing collective harm?

How can we develop more loving relationships with ourselves?

What is empathy?

How can we think, speak, and act in ways that are rooted in Ahimsa?

Each day includes optional practices, discussions and activities designed to highlight and investigate various dimensions of Ahimsa. We’ll engage with individual practices of self love, compassionate communication, community involvement, gratitude, environmental restoration and appreciation.

The daily flow will generally consist of:

AM :

We extend an invitation to you, whoever and wherever you are, to be a part of this inquiry into ahimsa. No prior understanding of Yoga is necessary, only a curiosity and desire to more expansively live with loving-kindness. May the work we will do together uplift and nurture ourselves, our teachers, our ancestors, our loved ones, our communities, our ecosystems, our planet, our future, and our collective.

YOUR GUIDe:

Annabelle was born and raised in Boise, ID, where she began practicing asana to treat somatic stress symptoms. After experiencing dramatic improvements, she continued on to train with Boise Om School to receive her 200H credentials at the age of 18. She relocated to South Florida where she studied Psychology, Sociology & Exercise Science, and later graduated with a BA. Annabelle first connected with Lakshmi Rising when she completed her 300H training with Liz, and continued on to apprentice with the school. Today, Annabelle is passionately curious about the intersection between yogic teachings and western psychophysical research. Her teachings fuse ancient yogic wisdom and practices with modern understandings of neuroscience, physiology, psychology and evolution; coupling remedies for suffering with insight into why, and how, humans actually suffer. In addition to teaching with Lakshmi Rising, Annabelle facilitates intensive and empowering retreats through her company, Pranic Path Yoga.
