Surfing, Body Surfing, and Beach-combing

Costa Rica is known as one of the world's premier surfing destinations. There are several good surfing spots very close to The Sanctuary. A 15 minute taxi ride will get you to the Montezuma breaks near Playa Grande and 30 minutes to Playa Carmen/Mal Pais/Santa Teresa where we are happy to arrange a lesson or board rental for you with top notch instructors. You can stroll down the hill to our local beach at Rio Lajas or walk another 10 minutes down the beach to Los Cedros and watch the surfers tear it up when the break is going off.

  • Rio Lajas - high tide / south swell / right point break. On good days it runs a few hundred meters.
  • Los Cedros - high tide only lefty point break, best when there is a south swell but always fun.
  • Playa Grande Montezuma - a mid/high tide spot with a consistent wave; best when there's a south swell.
  • Mal Pais-Playa Carmen - Santa Teresa areas are known for good constant surf and is only a 25-35 minute taxi/shuttle away.

Surfboard Rentals and Surfing Instruction

Local Dining

If your group is interested in foregoing one The Sanctuary’s exquisite dining experiences there are several options to choose from in Montezuma. Here are two recommendations:

Playa de Los Artistas
By far one of the best restaurants here on the Rich Coast, you will find “fine dining at the edge of the ocean.” Marked only by a small sign along the side of the road, Playa de Los Artistes is the ultimate in romantic and private, for couples or special groups. Dining adjacent to the sand, soft music plays, candlelights flicker, cool ocean breezes flow. Offering a menu that changes daily, the food is diverse as it is delicious, organic, natural, and fresh! While much of the entire menu features freshly caught fish, vegetarians are sure to find tasty choices.

Recommendations: Reservations highly recommended; cash only

Cocolores ("Coconut Colors")
Tucked back along the water's edge, Cocolores is a popular beach-front restaurant in Montezuma. Think...thatch ceiling... colorful lanterns hovering from above... homemade bread *always fresh*... napkins displayed, peeking out of conch shells. The food, the music, the decor, the waves rolling over and over just meters from your table make this lovely local place to dine.

Local Art and Artisans

Our neighboring town, Montezuma, boasts an artisan lined street set in a cozy cove in front of the Pacific Ocean. This is a great 10am-2pm excursion. You can get a fresh tropical juice, smoothie, ice cream, gelato, pizza and more while you shop for gifts for you and your loved ones.
