Your Guide

MATTHEW COHEN, a 5th Degree Blackbelt in the Shaolin style of Kung Fu, has been teaching Yoga and several Chinese Martial and Healing Arts for more than two decades.

His unique style focuses on heart centered classes that seamlessly incorporate Hatha / Taoist Yoga postures and breathing practices with dance, martial arts and poetry.

Matthew is also a highly sought after master teacher of Qi Gong and Tai Chi Chuan, the most practiced Martial Art in the world.  Spiral and circular movements are practiced slowly to cultivate vitality, power, strength, balance, awareness, sensitivity, responsiveness, cardiovascular health, muscle tone, flexibility, and reduced stress.

In addition, Matthew has developed a private healing practice.  For over 20 years he has studied various methods, including Thai, Chinese, and Japanese styles of bodywork, along with the Western Healing Arts of Craniosacral Therapy, Therapeutic Stretching, Somato Emotional Release, and Trauma Healing.  His extensive work in this area has become the foundation for all of his practices and teaching:

“If you have trauma, emotional or physical, the body may contract.  This contraction may lead to stagnation of life force, physical misalignment, lack of breath, and eventually Dis-Ease.  EVERY breath and movement can be a way to release tension, fear, and negativity.  These practices bring joy and compassion while they build strength and flexibility.  Ultimately, they encourage authenticity and kindness toward oneself and others.”
-Matthew Cohen

Matthew currently teaches Sacred Energy Arts (Martial Arts, Yoga, Qi Gong) at his center in Santa Monica, CA and at Exhale in Venice, CA. He opened Sacred Energy Arts Center in January 2007 and leads teacher trainings and intensive workshops both locally and internationally.

Journey to the Inner Temple: A Yoga Asana & Philosophy Intensive

with Heather Elton and Rose Baudin

18 June, 2013 - 28 June, 2013

Overview

(Includes yoga tuition, 3 gourmet meals a day and shared accommodation in a luxury jungle tree house.)

Journey to the Inner Temple is a magical 10-day yoga intensive designed for yoga teachers and students (with a strong intermediate asana practice), who want to deepen their understand yogic philosophy in a practical way that will connect the spiritual inquiry to the relevance of our every day lifes. Heather Elton and Rose Baudin are the teachers on the course and between them they have over 75 years of yoga experience, each with their own insight into the ancient yogic techniques and a lot to say about the practice. You will immerse yourself in yoga for eight hours a day, but the practice will overflow into nature – into the ocean, the surf, the river and waterfalls, natural pools and jungle. There will be plenty of time for reflection and integration of the teachings in an awe-inspiring environment.

This retreat will be authentic, intense and fun. It will be an transformational journey through Ayurveda principles, Patanjali’s 8-limbed path, Samkhya philosophy upon which yoga is based, a comprehensive understanding of koshas and vayus, and the use of mudras, yantras and mantras in the practice - all seamlessly woven together through asana, lectures, rituals and ceremonies. Lectures will examine both Dakshina Marga (right-hand) ans Vama Marga (left-hand) paths of tantric tradition. This retreat offers insight into your true nature and tools to transform deep-seated habitual behaviour and emotional states. We wish to lead you into the heart of pure nature in Costa Rica, and to your own heart on a journey to the Inner Temple.

The theme of the Journey to the Inner Temple is one of ‘purification’ to reveal the light and ecstasy of our Divine Origin. For most of us living in a stressful and chaotic world, this ‘light of wisdom’ is obscured by kleshas, karmic conditioning, koshas (subtle bodies) and doshas. This yoga intensive will focus on the elimination of debilitating toxins - physical, astral and causal – and to encourage the cultivation of rasa or ‘juiciness.’ As the pivotal purification ritual, Agni Hotra (fire ceremony) will be conducted at sunset to create a bridge between the manifest world and unmanifest world. Agnihotra spreads peaceful, loving vibrations and cleanses the nadis. This process purifies the atmosphere and reduces stress and tension, giving rise to mental peace and happiness.

The philosophy lectures aim to bring practical, integrated application to your practice. Asana for elimination physical impurities while promoting balance, rejuvenation, strength and confidence. Pranayama to remove obstructions in the nadis (subtle conduits) while promoting increased energy and mental clarity. Meditation will release mental ama (toxins) while expanding awareness, and promoting wellbeing and a joyful participation in all stages of life.

Each day begins with pranayama and mediation in the Yoga Pagoda, an exquisite building perched high up in the jungle canopy. Pranayama and Meditation will explore the ‘inner limbs’ of yoga. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga workshop will be taught in a way that the practice is accessible and enjoyable for everyone. An afternoon Yoga Clinic will delve into many aspects of the practice, including the alignment principles in key poses; the inner and outer techniques of Vinyasa that tie the poses together in a 'moving meditation'; develop the 'inner limbs' of yoga to develop focus and concentration skills that enhance clarity of mind; use the breath to feel safe enough to move through difficult poses and work honestly at your edge; shift energy in problem areas (hips & shoulders); Yin/restorative yoga is used as a healing/therapeutic tool to move through fear and release hardness in the body; experience deep inner peace, relaxation and insight; learn to rest and be at ease in the present moment. It's a deep practice, an inquiry into the self and the cosmos, that moves beyond the physical experience to make the yogic inquiry authentic and relevant to real life.
In order to come on this retreat, you should have a strong intermediate asana practice, one that you have done regularly for at least two years.

NOTE: Journey to the Inner Temple is a ‘module’ on the Advanced Yoga Teacher training course and is accredited with the Yoga Alliance for 100 hours. If you want Yoga Alliance certification, you need to be a graduate of any 200-hour YTT recognized by Yoga Alliance. The 100-hour course is part of the 500 RYT designed around three 100-hour modules. Students wanting credit for the course will be required to journal their experience on the retreat and write a short essay as part of the curriculum. People who don’t want to teach, or don’t want accreditation, are very welcome to come and won’t be expected to write the essay. Everyone should have a keen interest in yogic philosophy and have practiced some kind of meditation. A required reading list will be sent upon payment of the deposit.

Rose is an inspirational teacher with a global reputation. She has studied and practiced yoga for 43 years and has taught for 25. She met her mentor Swami Gauribala in Sri Lanka in 1971, and was initiated into the lineage of the Tamil Siddhas in 1984. During the 16 years she lived in India, she was instructed by masters in the various schools of yoga: Integral, Iyengar, Vini and Astanga as well as extensive meditation experience under the guidance of S.N. Goenka (Vipassana), Zen Master Hogen-san Yamahata, (Soto), and Sayadaw U Janaka (Satipatthana Insight Meditation). She was introduced to and taught the ritual of Agni Hotra by Dr. Robert Svoboda who instructed her in the way of his mentor, the Aghori Vimalananda. Since 1986, Rose has been based in Australia where she teaches yoga classes, weekend meditation retreats, and lectures for Yoga Arts. She has been conducting international yoga intensives, residential retreats and seminars for the past 20 years.

Rose's teaching style is an organic synthesis of her knowledge and experience and she weaves Ayurvedic wisdom and tantric practices into each class. Her sessions are challenging yet energizing, structured yet spontaneous, focused yet humorous. Strong emphasis is placed upon cultivation of concentration and awareness of breath.

Heather Elton
(Asana, Vinyasa, Astanga, Meditation, Self Inquiry, Techniques and Teaching Methodology, Course Coordinator, Founder and Director of Elton Yoga)

Heather teaches Astanga in the Mysore tradition of Sri K Pattabhi Jois, and Vinyasa Flow Yoga based on 'classical' Astanga in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Yoga philosophy is integrated with breath and asana to reveal the spiritual path underlying the practice, and the technology to stabilise the mind and realise our true nature. It works on a deep physical and psychological level. She is a believer in the ancient yogic path to Self-Realisation.

She has practiced Yoga since 1986 and teaches in London and on international workshops/retreats. Heather has studied many different lineages of Hatha Yoga, including BKS Iyengar technique with Alaric Newcombe, Glenn Ceresoli and Donna Holleman. She has studied Astanga with Sri K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath in Mysore, and many of their senior students. She learned the Primary and Intermediate Series adjustments from Nancy Gilgoff, completed a Teacher Training certification with Richard Freeman and more recently studied the traditional Krishnamacharya method of asana, pranayama & kundalini metaphysics with BNS Iyengar at the Patanajala Yoga Shala in Mysore. She completed the Tripsichore Yoga Theatre Teacher Training with Edward Clark and considers David Life and Sharon Gannon of Jivamukti Yoga to be truly inspirational people and teachers. She is currently researching Tibetan Yantra Yoga.

Heather also has a meditation practice and did two 10-day silent Vipassana meditation retreats in Myanmar (2006) and Hereford, UK (2009). More recently she is a student of the Tibetan Tantric Vajrayana path under the tutelage of Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche. All forms of non-dualism are of interest on this mystical path, including Self-Inquiry, based on the teachings of Ramana Maharishi and she visited his ashram in Tiruvannamalai, India (2009). Native American Shamanic healing techniques also inform her yoga path. Heather is is certified member of Yoga Alliance at the highest level, E-RYT 500 and RYS-500.

The Venue

The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is a luxurious Zen-style yoga retreat set back in the jungle and only 1000 meters from the beach and the Pacific Ocean. This 40-acre private wildlife sanctuary is situated at the southernmost tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is nestled between two rivers, with waterfalls, and has an abundance of exotic mammals, resplendent birds, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians and insects. The Sanctuary is built by yogis and designed with contemplation and meditation in mind. It’s 100% off-the-grid experience in pure nature with luxury-modern accommodations and serving ‘artistic’ organic vegetarian and vegan cuisine.

The Yoga Pagoda has a Zen-style aesthetic, inspired by the traditional Japanese Pagoda, but with a tropical modern twist. The foyer is made with brushed quartz. An oxidized slate stone walkway leads you to the ‘sacred space’ with 25-foot ceilings and open walls. The ventilation is excellent and the air is pure, manifesting jungle paradise, ocean views, twilight sunsets, and nighttime stargazing. Yoga is done on a tropical teak wood floor - the ultimate shock absorbing material for yoga asanas, dancing in the moonlight, or just feeling good beneath the soles of your feet. The Puja and Meditation wing allows for more intimate reflection and contemplation sheltered with screened walls that open up to the jungle. There is also a Salon, where guests can gather for teaching workshops, film night, book reading, journal writing, or socializing on eco-rattan furniture with cozy cushions.

You will stay in a modern, luxurious, spacious, loft-style jungle treehouse, built with teak wood and designed to harmonize within the natural environment, and provide a comfortable up-close and very personal experience with nature. Upstairs in the bedroom mezzanine; guest beds each have an eye-level view of the forest canopy, the passing monkeys, singing tropical birds, and scented floral trees. There is a private dressing area and a spacious bathroom with a tropical garden view solar hot water shower. Terraces offer plenty of room to perch yourself at canopy level with your favorite book, a pair of binoculars, digital camera and a glass of fresh spring water.

The talented chef creates three unforgettable meals a day, inspired by Ayurvedic cooking techniques. The healthy food is hand-crafted, organic, gourmet cuisine, made with love, and pleasing to all the senses. Meals use the best seasonal produce sourced locally from Costa Rica farmers.

You can swim in the ocean, rinse off in the waterfalls, hike along the rivers, walk thought the manicured tropical gardens and jurassic jungle, or simply just relax in one of the natural swimming holes. All are ideal for both inner and outer exploration.

Therapeutic treatments are also available.

About Alchemy of Yoga

This 200 hour program is recognized by Yoga Alliance as a REGISTERED 200 HOUR YOGA SCHOOL and offers you a unique opportunity to make a deep commitment to learning more about yourself. The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is a safe haven: a nurturing place to engage in open minded self-exploration. I am devoted to offering you an atmosphere in which freedom of expression, fun, creativity and passion for life are "totally" encouraged! My program covers the foundations of the 8 limbed path of Yoga and believes in yoga as a life-long truthful celebration of ourselves and our world.

Why This Program Changes Your Life

Something magical and mystical happens when a group of high-intentioned individuals make the decision to gather together for 200 hours with the purpose of uplifting their lives & expanding their consciousness into radical authenticity. The result is something beyond words. It is, as best as I can explain it, the Alchemy of Yoga at its best. Chapter 2 verse 1 of the Yoga Sutras sets forth how the Alchemy of Yoga actually works. "Tapas svadhyaya ishvara pranidhana kriya yoga." Translated to mean that yoga helps us transform ourselves on three levels:

1. Physical Alchemy - Tapas helps us ignite the changes we want to make in our lives. It is about the getting fired up and passionate. Literally it means heating the body through moving and breathing in the vinyasa

2. Mental Alchemy - Svadhaya. While we are following the discipline of tapas and engaging in physical practice to help move our stuck energy we are watching ourselves. In yoga we study the self to learn about the self. Here the mental alchemy is through self-observation. We witness what is going on in our thoughts, what are we thinking.

3. Spiritual Alchemy - ishvara pranidahana. As we are doing and watching we let go of the ego of judgment. We move beyond wanting life to be different and begin to feel the surrender that allows what is being offered to mix together. We practice ishvara pranidhana as we trust the universal intelligence that hugs us from all directions to know what it's doing. And once we find this trust we begin to believe that beauty and goodness are within us flowing nonstop and there is no reason to stop this flow for its natural current is to align with the current of grace that is everywhere outisde us. Beauty becomes our way of life. Happiness becomes our natural alchemy.

You see when you get together in a Teacher Training Tribe (aka Alchemy of Yoga) we are all like the Alchemist in his/her laboratory mixing ingredients. For us as yogis our laboratory is our mat and the ingredients are our bodies, our poses, our breath, our thoughts and the mixing it all together creates a different result every time. A Teacher Training Program changes your life. You wake up to the power you have to go into the laboratory of your life experience and mix the potions you want to create your best life going forward!

I believe that the Alchemy of Yoga Teacher Training Program sparks the fire of transformation in everyone. Apply today! Namaskaram!

Testimonials

Silvia Mordini is a teacher of teachers, and a wonderful mentor who compassionately evokes self-inquiry and transformation. Without a doubt, Silvia’s friendship and mentorship have helped to shape my path to service, adventure, and stepping outwards of my bounds and into a world wide open. - Hannah

Silvia- I wanted to teach yoga because I have personally experienced the power it has to change lives. I so deeply wanted to share this magic with people – especially students my age who I saw struggling and fighting with life instead of living it. I am endlessly grateful to Silvia for teaching by example to live life with love for others, and more importantly with big love for yourself. One of the most beautiful parts about this teacher training for me was that the more I learned, the more I realized this is just the beginning of an even greater journey. Silvia has provided me the inspiration to continue flowing through my own evolution. I can truly say with my whole loving and honest heart, that embarking on this "self-study" has been the best decision I have ever made." -- Alysha

Silvia- I entered teacher training just hoping to deepen my practice but the reality is I graduated as a whole new me. This was an adventure that pushed, challenged and encouraged me to grow. In a matter of months I became more self-aware and self-confident than any time in my life. I wasn’t surrounded by a group of students that wanted to perfect their asanas. I joined a Kula (a community of the heart), an extended family that offered unconditional support and inspiration. I am grateful to Silvia Mordini for the professional, organized and extremely informative yoga training, but I am eternally indebted to Silvia for creating a safe space for growth and helping open my eyes to my potential!” -Casey

Silvia- You are such a wonderful person and a gifted teacher! I am truly blessed to have found you and am honored to be one of your students. I look forward to continuing my teaching and inspiring others as you have inspired me. Thank You for everything! -- Maryann

Silvia- I honestly recommend this training for anyone who enjoys practicing yoga and is interested in personal development and growth. It is an amazing journey you take to know yourself and have a better understanding of who you are. A beautiful, enlightening experience that I would do all over again. It has developed, supported and empowered me in my life. - Dana, lululemon

Silvia- You are a gifted teacher, philosopher and it is truly a blessing to learn from you. With love and gratitude, Nancy
Silvia- I am so grateful for your love, light & inspiration. Thank you for being you & for instilling such grace & virtue in all that you do! - Katy

Silvia- One of the best things I have ever done for myself was take the Alchemy of Yoga Teacher Training. It was life changing in many ways. Not only did I get incredible teaching from one of the best yoga instructors in the industry but I also became a part of a wonderful kula that was also so much a part of my growth and learning. If you have the chance to train with Silvia Mordinin, you will be amazed - she is the best of the best. I'm blown away every time I take one of her classes and to be able to take her training was amazing. Taking this training is something I am very grateful for and proud of. If you have the chance - take it! -Sue

Silvia- I took Silvia's Teacher Training and highly recommend this experience for anyone seeking this certification. Silvia is a consummate professional with a multitude of talents as a trainer, but more than that she exemplifies everything that a true yogi should be: caring and compassionate with her students, living and breathing the yoga sutras both on and off the mat. As a certified personal trainer with my own business I also appreciate her organizational skills. In fact, I often think, "How does she do this all and do it so well?!" The answer is clear, she loves yoga and she loves to teach it to everyone from the new teachers she mentors to the students in every class. I wholeheartedly recommend this program to everyone with a passion and dedication for yoga that is willing to invest their time, heart and talent to the practice. Many blessings for the future! -Jackie

Silvia- I am impressed on how hard you try to meet everyone's schedule, it can't be easy. Thanks to your dedication and assurance I can flow through yoga poses, I am now actually playing with yoga more and listening to what my body inspires me to do instead of trying to do yoga like everyone else. Yoga has become so much more an enriching experience for me rather than a physical struggle. So many thanks, I am very grateful for all the help you have given me. - Anonymous

Silvia- Alchemy of Yoga Teacher Training provided me with the skills to sit confidently and authentically in the seat of the teacher. I came away with the ability to look deep inside myself to really know who I am and what I want to shine out to the world. All this and I developed friendships with the most amazing and inspiring women who warm my heart and nurture my soul. - Nancy

Silvia- I enjoyed the training and learning many things, one thing I am very happy about, especially how to incorporate more yoga into my everyday life! Thanks! - Cheryl

Silvia- Thank you for caring about the quality of our teacher training program. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself. Thank you for teaching from your heart and thank you for making a difference in my life. - Sue

I will remember this as one of the most rewarding times in my life and look forward to the rewards I will see in the future because of your program. Thank you for all that you do for us to help us succeed, it really means the world to me. Peace and Love - Jennifer

Silvia- You have been a wonderful mentor, teacher & guide to me while I'm going thru my journey. I can't thank you enough for all that you've given me. And NO one compares to your teaching style...you are truly one of a kind & I'm so happy I was able to do my training with you. Looking forward to learning lots more from you! - Lexi

with Patti Doyle and Liz Lindh

2 November, 2013 - 8 November, 2013

Overview

As the days get shorter and the time to turn the clocks back approaches it's helpful to keep in mind the words of the wise and witty Eleanor Roosevelt, "It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness." The sunlight will wane as it does every year, but you can kindle your own light on this tropical retreat. Through dynamic and challenging vinyasa yoga with Patti every morning; deep, restorative yoga with Liz every evening and afternoon healing beauty rituals at the waterfall; your body, mind and soul will illuminate, brighten and glow. You'll also have time to enjoy hiking in the jungle, gardens and orchard; relaxing and sunbathing by the pool; therapeutic massage, acupuncture or facials on site; optional excursions to the beach, surfing, snorkeling or zip-lining; and a movie night on the big screen in the Yoga Pagoda.

We walk the spiritual path and bring that experience to the course to guide you to find the qualities one needs to be an excellent teacher and embrace yoga into your life.

Let Go Into The Flow ~~ An immersion into nature with Vinyasa Flow Yoga & Live Music from The Hang

Guided by Dagmar Spremberg and Gaudan

23 November, 2013 - 29 November, 2013

Overview

For those of you who have an interest in both deepening your yoga practice and re-calibrating your inner flow through the inherent realignment powers of Mother Nature, this retreat is designed to be shared around an intimate setting with like minded people while internationally recognized yoga instructors and musicians guide you both on and off the mat in the jungle of Costa Rica. Treat yourself to a week at The Sanctuary at Two Rivers, Costa Rica, one of the worlds most beautiful places where you will find inspiration, become recharged, and feel rejuvenated. Flow is much easier to tap into when you have a combination of Nature, Yoga and Music.

Got music? Music moves us. The powerful effects go far beyond the sensuously tactile experiences found through sound and rhythm. It is discovering this deeper sense of harmony in the body that helps us to embrace and dance with the rhythmic flow of life. When we are with our lover our heartbeats sync. When tuning an instrument the other chords will resonate at the same octave as the one plucked. When we explore asanas, regulate our breathe, and move to a rhythmic beat we sync together as one, creating a harmony as a whole. Practicing together with rhythm and sound assists us into a deeper experience of yoga, both within and without our selves. The ultimate goal of yoga, Enlightenment or Freedom, is for our self to be in sync with The Self of All that Is.  Come to the jungle to lose yourself in order to find your self in Her Rhythm. It is through the dissolution of resistance where we will discover ourselves dancing in the moonlight of the moment and missing absolutely nothing.

Please come join us for a magical week in nature. Our intention is to create a space where you feel relaxed to surrender to your own inner beat and dance with the wildlife and pristine nature surrounding you. Morning flow is a dynamic Vinyasa practice with Dagmar. Evening flow is led by Dagmar while being accompanied by global artist Gaudan (The Gaudan Project) who will be playing the Hang, a unique instrument with an ancient sound and mystical feel. The phenomenon of overtones combined with opening yoga asanas assists to harmonize our individual frequencies with the Universal vibration of the macrocosm. You will leave this week feeling inspired, re-aligned, and renewed.

Her vinyasa flow classes emphasize the art of surrender into a meditative flow, supporting you to go deeper into your breathing and creating more awareness, while simultaneously creating more strength in your body.  Since 2010 Dagmar and her partner Gaudan are traveling around the globe to teach their unique Vinyasa Flow & Hang music classes & retreats , when not at their base in Montezuma.

Originally from Switzerland, Gaudan is a well known artist and muralist who has been living in Costa Rica for over 20 years. 4 years ago he fell in love with Dagmar, Yoga & the Hang instrument and started an interesting journey to receive a HANG. This instrument is handmade in Switzerland by PANART and often used for sound healing therapy. Besides playing in Dagmar’s yoga classes, he further co- founded “The Gaudan Project”, where he creates music to share with other musicians and performance artists.

Time on the mat gives us some space to figure out where we’re going in life. This will give us the clarity to KNOW where you want to go. This concept of an internal GPS is essential to yoga. It means the spiritual evolving in the direction of your most inspired life. The opportunity to achieve this is remarkable.

Why? Because something happens while on a yoga retreat that breaks the bonds of ordinary awareness and expands the consciousness of each individual to a level that would otherwise would have taken months or years of ordinary living to attain. This acceleration of evolution is mystical, meaning that the explanation of the change is beyond logic and reason. The term from quantum physics, “quantum leap”, comes to mind. A quantum leap means "a phenomena where an electron orbiting the nucleus of an atom changes its position without having traversed the space between its old and new orbit and without taking any time to do so. As scientifically verifiable as this phenomena is, it is also on the order of a miracle, for science has no explanation how this effect happens." Join us for the magic, miracle and power of transformation!

Take to heart the words of Danna Faulds. She writes,
“Let go of the ways you though life would unfold; the holding of plans or dreams or expectations — Let it go.

Save your strength to swim with the tide. The choice to fight what is here before you now will only result in struggle, fear, and desperate attempts to flee from the very energy you long for.

Let it all go and flow with the grace that washes through your days whether you receive it gently or with all your quills raised to defend against invaders.

Take this on faith: the mind may never find the explanations that it seeks, but you will move forward nonetheless.
Let it all go and find the place of rest and peace, and certain transformation."
